7 Song Tape/Thank You For The Coffee is a new, limited edition, self-released, hand stamped cd ep from Georgia-bred songwriter Tom Leach. After having written hundreds of songs, releasing two albums and one single(a duet with Vic Chesnutt) on the former Rykodisc imprint Slow River, Tom moved to New York City from Boston in 2001 where he has been writing and performing ever since. Each of these new songs were written and recorded on four track tape within a period of two to three hours, with no second takes. This process yields a sense of spontaneity and personality not always found in today’s country music , americana, and the like. “7 Song Tape/Thank You For The Coffee” is a small, rough preview of a song cycle called “Macon, Georgia,” an epic modeled after Willie Nelson’s classic “Phases and Stages” to be released in the near future. These solo recordings carry on the country traditions of life on the road, love lost, and ultimately, won again. A close listen brings to mind the sounds of Don Williams, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings, with echoes of sixties folk/rock. As a songwriter, Tom Leach’s words and music demonstrate a deep understanding and appreciation of the classic structures employed by Bob McDill, Harlan Howard, and Cindy Walker, to name a few.
